SUMMARY:
An attorney is sought who, under general direction, will be responsible for
the criminal prosecution of Class C misdemeanors and violations of
municipal ordinances in the Carrollton Municipal Court. Class C
misdemeanors include traffic violations, assault, disorderly conduct,
public intoxication, City ordinance violations, and theft, among others.
The Carrollton Municipal Court is a court of record. This position may also
include performing legal research, advising on Texas Public Information Act
and Texas Open Meetings Act matters, negotiating and drafting contracts,
complaints and lawsuits made against and/or on behalf of the City, and
general City-related advice.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Adhere to assigned work schedule as outlined in City and department
attendance policies and procedures.
Ability to research and draft legal documents including City
ordinances, criminal complaints, resolutions, etc., for compliance
with all applicable laws.
Ability to research and prepare legal documents in relation to
criminal litigation, including but not limited to discovery,
discovery responses, motions, appellate briefs, and all pleadings.
Ability to conduct trials and hearings, as needed.
Ability to prepare and submit written reports to the City Attorney
on proposed legislation, progress reports, and legal opinions.
Ability to conduct legal research regarding the consequences of
various municipal government functions and prepare opinions for
review by the City Attorney.
Ability to communicate legal options to management level staff in
the City.
This role will be required to also assist in other aspects of
municipal law; the City's legal department is small, so
versatility, flexibility, and adaptability is essential.

SUPERVISORY/BUDGET RESPONSIBILITIES:
None.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Juris Doctorate.
Requires a current License from the Texas State Bar.

Experience in working as an attorney for the state
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Frequent reaching, sitting, talking, seeing, hearing, and manual
dexterity.
Occasional lifting and carrying up to 10 pounds.
Work is typically performed in a standard office environment.
Occasional exposure to criminal suspects and prison inmates.
